Wehrmacht/ Heer Eastern Medal 1941/42

Description

Medal of the first winter in Russia (Winterschlacht im Osten 1941-42). Known as the “Frozen Meat” medal. The medal is round with a concave shape made of zinc and in the so-called “buntmetall” or war metal, Wehrmacht eagle with wings swept down holding a swastika superimposed on an oak leaf, ring on a model 35 helmet with grenade stick inside. The obverse is convex with the legend “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42” (Battle in the Eastern winter) plus a crossed sword with an oak blade. The band has red colors with a black and white stripe, the black being twice the white, it is believed that the red responds to the blood shed in the fight, the white the snow and the black honors the memory of the fallen In the battle.
