Description
Kriegsmarine officer’s dagger, 2nd Model (Dolch für Offiziere der Kriegsmarine), with its original portepee. The blade is a fantastic steel blade with sharp acid-etched naval motifs on both sides. These motifs consist of a central anchor on one side and a sailing ship flanked by arabesque and serpentine images on the other. The blade features a careful logo of the maker’s mark “E.U.F. HORSTER” of Solingen. The white handle is completed with braided wire. The brass fittings show only minimal, light aging, with virtually no wear. The beautifully hammered scabbard of this dagger retains a wonderful original finish and is nice and straight, with no dents or damage. The scabbard suspension rings are intact, and the scabbard release button still functions. It is a really very beautiful dagger and in an impressive overall condition.
NOTE.- There has been much debate over the years about whether this type of engravings on daggers were only characteristic of WKC and Puma, not of “Horster”, which was period or post-war, it has had its detractors who, believing themselves to be in possession of the absolute truth, have done nothing more than assume without sufficient and truthful evidence that they were not from the period, on the other hand it has also had its supporters (like myself), among which are included countless reputable dealers in Europe and the US who have sold them as rare and good, among many others we have the scholar in this matter and writer of numerous works on the subject “Thomas T. Wittmann” who in fact currently has one for sale on his website.
